Page 2 of 2 The synthetic wire, the disease of the worm and the abandonment of natural silk caused the decline of Cevennes sericiculture. The Museum of Silk with St Hippolite of the Fort and Magnanerie of Castling with Holy-Cross-Valley-Frenchwoman recall her epopee. The public library of Saint-Germain-of-Calberte constituted a bottom of historical books relating to the Cevennes. They are works of great quality at the disposal of the interested people, and this free. Each top, each valley has its legend, like that of the Wolf of Gévaudan. But all is not only legend… R.L.Stevenson, Scottish young person, author of “the Island to the Treasury” decided to cross the Cevennes in 1878. Initially solitary hiker, curious about the history of his brothers of religion, then accompanied by Modestine, a she-ass full with character and courage, it traversed: Velay, Gévaudan, the Lozere Mount then the heart of the Cevennes… Its log book, heading “Travels with an ass in the Cevennes”, inspires by many hikers, who carry out the same course scrupulously or partially (see excursions with an ass)  With the XIX ème century and the beginning of XXéme as the old ones testify some, a dense population occupied the major part of the territory. Most of the large fauna had been eliminated. But today the revival of the forests and the extent of the moors left in waste lands recreated a habitat favorable for wild boars, stags, roe-deers, moufflons…. The fawn-coloured vultures found the gorges of the Tarn and Jonte, and the beavers, water of the rivers. They also belong to the inheritance. … Each peak, between St-Jean-of-Gard and the MT Lozere are “drailles”, for “the mountain pastures”, the passage of the herds of transhumance.  When one speaks about the Cevennes, one very often evokes them with the past, but they are quite present… Passenger of the landscape, if you encounter a difficulty to cross Crete, to cross Gardon, do not despair and rappellez you that this area is deserved… The Cevennes inheritance is in danger!
