Two thousandyears ago, Andusia was a Gallo-roman city. However, the history ofthe toum really began in the lOth century after thefounding ofthe seigneury ofAnduze, which, by the 12th century, hadgrown to become the most powerjul seigneury in the entire Languedoc région. The toum then prospered as a trading centre and converted to Protestantism. In the 19th century Anduze enjoyed another period ofprosperity for many years until the silk worms wereplagued by a disease. The varnishea vases, which were once purchased by Louis XPVfor his orange grove at Versailles, hâve acquired international famé. The clock tower (1320) is one ofthe only remaining sections ofthe ramparts destroyedin 1629. Thefountain (1649), which stands next to the covered market, was topped with a cast-iron kiosk and colourful tiles in the 19th century En haut : fontaine sur la place centrale.
