The ancient Orange city seems to make close-cropped table of all the former occupations. Nothing predisposed with the creation of a city in this point of the plain in the north of the hill. Winds, marshes, floods constituted a hostile environment there. One thus needed a tough will of the Roman State to carry out an urban project of a rare monumentality.
The ancient city is organized around an altered religious sanctuary on several occasions, dedicated to the emperor. Its monumental architecture is instrumentalisée in a setting in imposing scene with the service of the imperial ideology. Thus, the citizen or the visitor could not escape this impressive vision which guided obligatorily its glance, as of the accesses from the arc, towards a prospect learnedly elaborate where, staged until the top of the hill, monuments, temples and gantries answered themselves. Indeed, the Roman way, via Clutched it, coming from Lugdunum, changed after the passage of the arc into penetrating rectilinear, which, north in the south, spun right in direction of the Saint-Eutrope hill, crossed the doors of the rampart, skirted the western side of the forum and ended in the religious sanctuary.
This monumentality is marked as of the accesses of the city by a triumphal arch dedicated to the glory of the founders of the city: veterans of the iie Gallica, then Re-dedicated in the honor of the Tibère emperor. In addition to its honorary function, it symbolically marks separation between the world of alive and the world of deaths; indeed, on both sides of the way of Clutched, extended from the necropoles whose burials and vestiges of two mausoleums discovered in 1995, with the district of Fork-Old women, show the extent, the density and the richness.
